A Dedicated Apprentice and His Mentor 👨🏭👴
Once upon a time, there was a young man who worked diligently at a factory. His mentor, an experienced technician, imparted valuable advice: “Talk less, do more, and never stop developing your skills.” Over the years, the young man mastered every aspect of the factory’s operations.
Ten years later, when the old man retired, the young apprentice took over as a technician. Despite his unwavering dedication and hard work, he often felt unappreciated. One day, he visited his mentor to share his frustrations.
The Problem of Being Overlooked 🤔
The young man sighed and expressed his concerns:
“I’ve followed your advice for years. I’ve learned every skill and focused entirely on my work. But while others with less experience have been promoted, I’m still stuck earning the same as I did as your apprentice.”
The mentor, hearing his apprentice’s plight, asked, “Are you sure you’ve made yourself indispensable to the factory?”
The young man confidently replied, “Yes.”
The First Lesson: Taking a Break 🛑✨
After pacing thoughtfully, the old man gave unexpected advice: “Take a day off. Give yourself a break.”
Initially surprised, the young man trusted his mentor and requested a day off. When he returned, the manager called him into the office and shared the difficulties the factory faced during his absence. Tasks typically managed by him went unresolved, highlighting his importance.
Recognizing this, the manager promoted him to Senior Technician, acknowledging his value and encouraging him to continue his excellent work.
The Strategy That Backfired 😟
Encouraged by the outcome, the young man started taking occasional days off whenever he felt underappreciated. Each time, he returned to find the factory struggling in his absence, leading to further recognition and rewards.
However, this pattern didn’t last forever. One day, he arrived at the factory only to find his access revoked. Shocked and confused, he learned he had been terminated. Desperate for answers, he turned to his mentor.
The Second Half of the Lesson 🕯️
“Why did I lose my job?” the young man asked, his pride wounded.
The old man sighed and replied, “You only heard half the lesson.”
He explained:
“You understood that no one notices a light bulb that is always on. It’s only when it goes off that people realize its value. But you missed the second half: if a light bulb goes off too often, it will eventually be replaced by one that’s more reliable. Who wants a light bulb they can’t count on?”
Finding Balance in Life ⚖️
The mentor continued, “In life, people often take others for granted until they’re gone. But this isn’t a reason to abandon your efforts or test others’ patience. Balance is key. Do your best work consistently, but don’t let yourself be exploited. At the same time, don’t stop everything just because you feel unappreciated.“
He concluded with a heartfelt reminder: “Appreciate those who stand by you, and ensure you strike a balance in all aspects of life. Life will reward you in return.”
